Vapnik-chervonenkis Classes of Definable Sets
We show that a class of subsets of a structure uniformly definable by a first-order formula is a Vapnik-Chervonenkis class if and only if the formula does not have the independence property. Via this connection we obtain several new examples of Vapnik-Chervonenkis classes, including sets of positivity of finitely subanalytic functions.

Shripad Thite May 11, 1998 Abstra t The ounting omplexity lasses are de ned in terms of the number of a epting omputation paths of nondetereministi polynomial-time Turing ma hines. They are, therefore, the ounting versions of de ision problems in NP. We review the properties of well-known ounting lasses like #P, P, GapP, SPP et . We also give an overview of the proof of Toda's theorem that rela...
متن کاملCounting Triangulations of Some Classes
We compute the number of triangulations of a convex k-gon each of whose sides is subdivided by r−1 points. We find explicit formulas and generating functions, and we determine the asymptotic behaviour of these numbers as k and/or r tend to infinity. We connect these results with the question of finding the planar set of points in general position that has the minimum possible number of triangul...
متن کاملNote on quantum counting classes∗
We define counting classes #BPP and #BQP as natural extensions of the classical well-studied one #P to the randomized and quantum cases. It is then shown that P#P = P#BQP.
متن کاملCounting primes in residue classes
We explain how the Meissel-Lehmer-Lagarias-Miller-Odlyzko method for computing π(x) can be used for computing efficiently π(x, k, l), the number of primes congruent to l modulo k up to x. As an application, we computed the number of prime numbers of the form 4n ± 1 less than x for several values of x up to 1020 and found a new region where π(x, 4, 3) is less than π(x, 4, 1) near x = 1018.
